Tunnel boats fly over the water on the lift created by their airfoil-shaped hulls and the air trapped and compressed between their sponsons. plus, they turn sharper than any other vehicle on water or land. the fastest outboard boats in the world are tunnels. but you don't have to be a champboat driver or formula 1 racer to enjoy a tunnelboat.. The tunnel hull is a strange 'bird'. while the tunnel derives much of its high performance from air lift, it depends at the same time on its planing interaction with the water to maintain a stable and controlled 'flight'. this interdependence of water and air force dynamics is the key to the approach to tunnel design. The unique tunnel hull design of our boats is based upon principles developed in the hydroplane industry. the dual-sponson tunnel hull traps air coming in from the bow and compresses it towards the stern, causing you to ride on a cushion of air..

A tunnel-hull is constructed to displace water from the bottom of a jon boat through a trough in the center and the rear of the jon boat upward toward the boats’ motor when on plane. this allows you the jon boat user to jack the motor above the bottom of your boat to where the hull can hit obstructions first and not the foot of the motor.. Mod vp simply refers to a specific race class (vee production). you see many larger catamarans with a true 2 sponson tunnel design (referred to as asymmetrical tunnels) but it’s rare for small pleasure boats. f1 style race boats are a true tunnel hull (air entrapment) as well but that design has many drawbacks for pleasure use.. About the plans: i am not a naval architect, or an engineer, or even a draftsman. i am a forester by education, a furniture-maker by profession, and a boat-builder, sailor and racer by inclination. i have built a number of boats over the last 35 years or so: from the 8-foot hydroplane i built when i was fourteen, to a 21-foot sailboat built in the 1990s, and a bunch of tunnel and v-bottom.
